2025 saw the R&B genre vault back into the mainstream, with multiple songs charting on the Billboard Hot 100 through the summer and the fall.

Kehlani's "Folded", Mariah the Scientist's "Burning Blue", and Leon Thomas's "Mutt" all made the year-end Billboard Hot 100 chart for 2025.

R&B continued a pretty remarkable resurgence in the first half of 2026, with both established and emerging stars delivering some of the strongest albums of the year so far. Ranging from soulful traditional projects to genre-blending releases, the R&B genre showcased its versatility while producing multiple albums that have already surfaced in the album of the year conversation.

From Jill Scott and Brent Faiyaz to Kehlani and 6LACK, these are the R&B albums that defined the first half of 2026

These rankings take into account the songwriting, vocal performances, critical and fan reception, cultural impact, and overall album quality in the first half of the year in 2026. Here's a look at the ranking of the five best R&B albums from the first half of 2026.

5. 6lack - LOVE IS THE NEW GANGSTA

While it might not have had the mainstream breakthrough appeal of his 2016 project FREE 6LACK a decade later, LOVE IS THE NEW GANGSTA might be 6lack's best and most polished album of his career to date.

LOVE IS THE NEW GANGSTA highlights 6LACK's signature self-reflective songwriting while expanding and polishing his sound with more vibrant production and some of his strongest vocal performances to date.

By this stage of his career, 6LACK has really mastered blending elements of R&B, soul, hip-hop, and pop into a cohesive sound on a project. Young Thug, Odeal, Leon Thomas, and Mereba all delivered great guest appearances on this record.

4. Leven Kali - LK99

Anyone sleeping on Leven Kali should immediately take notice of his new project, LK99, with its intriguing blend of funky beats and instrumentals, soulful vocals and sampling, and jazz-infused backdrops, making it a standout project.

Strong tracks on the tracklist, such as "BREATHE!," "Are U Still," and "Pieces," highlight Kali's underrated vocal performances with his ability to play the saxophone, horns, and bass.

While rooted in R&B, LK99 also incorporates elements of funk, disco, gospel, and jazz. Leven Kali pulls inspiration and elements ranging from funk to disco to gospel, and the instrumentals are fantastic throughout the tracklist.

3. Kehlani - Self Titled

Kehlani had one of the biggest mainstream R&B releases of the first half of 2026, with her self-titled LP being her first full-length album release since 2024. This self-titled record was one of the best performances in the past few years for Kehlani.

She rode the success of her Billboard 200 top-10 charting smash hit single "Folded" to a successful album rollout and nearly 70,000 units sold in the project's first week. That was good for Kehlani to become the first female R&B artist in 2026 to have an album chart in the top five of the Billboard 200 in its first week.

Her self-titled album also topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for Billboard in its first week. While the commercial success this album attained is undeniable, few albums released this year offered more flowing and cohesive artistic statements.

2. Brent Faiyaz - Icon

Brent Faiyaz's consistency and album quality in this past decade have cemented him among the most respected and anticipated male R&B artists in the genre in the modern day. One of Icon's biggest strengths is its consistency.

Brent Faiyaz never goes too far out from his signature sound, but the album never feels repetitive thanks to its polished production and emotionally vulnerable songwriting.

This album clearly draws influence from R&B and soul greats like Alicia Keys, Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Lauryn Hill. Brent does a good job of combining that vintage nostalgia feel with a laid-back and chill album listening experience for the audience.

Icon stands out for its combination of introspective and smooth vocals and lyrics, soulful and luxurious instrumentation, and romantic songwriting.

1. Jill Scott - To Whom This May Concern

Jill Scott nailed her return to the R&B genre after a hiatus of album releases that lasted just over a decade. To Whom This May Concern is a fantastic album that shows that Scott hasn't missed a beat with her amazing voice and wonderful storytelling throughout the project's 19-song tracklist.

This album deserves a lot more recognition for its beautiful vocals, amazing and inspired songwriting, and poetic lyrics. The combination of retro and modern R&B production, strong hip-hop features, and super jazzy and soulful instrumentals really expresses the full experience one should expect to get from listening to a full-length Jill Scott project here.

More so than any other R&B album from the first half of this year, To Whom This May Concern balanced elegant and timeless songwriting, elite vocals, and gripping emotional depth from start to finish.
