Hip hop has always been more than just music; it’s a culture, a form of expression, and, for many, a source of healing. In a recent interview with Elle Magazine, A$AP Rocky opened up about the deep emotional role artists play in people’s lives. His reflections touched on the power of music, the struggles of mental health, and his own journey through fatherhood and creative work.

Rocky’s comments come as he promotes his latest project, Highest 2 Lowest, a unique collaboration with director Spike Lee and legendary actor Denzel Washington. The film dives into emotional extremes, something Rocky says mirrors the chaotic energy of anxiety, a theme that resonates deeply in both his personal life and the larger rap community.

What stood out most in the conversation, however, was Rocky’s perspective on Jay-Z. In a bold comparison, he said fans often treat the rap icon as more than an artist; they turn to him like a therapist.

A$AP Rocky calls Jay-Z the therapist of hip-hop

During the interview, A$AP Rocky stated, “I think Jay-Z is a Black therapist. A lot of people come to him with their problems.” His remark speaks to the trust and influence Jay-Z holds not only among fans but also within the industry.

This connection between rap and emotional support isn’t new. Hip hop has long been a space for expressing struggle, trauma, and resilience. Rocky’s comments highlight how music becomes therapy for listeners, and how artists like Jay-Z carry that emotional weight.

Rocky questions traditional therapy while promoting Highest 2 Lowest

Discussing Highest 2 Lowest, Rocky described the film as emotionally intense, saying it felt like “an anxiety attack.” He also shared his doubts about conventional therapy, adding, “My outlook on therapy is so pessimistic, it’s not even funny… I compare therapists to psychics. If you haven’t shared the same experiences, how can they genuinely help?”

His viewpoint points to a disconnect that many in the rap world feel about traditional mental health services, instead leaning on shared experiences and community as a form of healing.

Family, fatherhood, and a new baby

The interview wasn’t all about music and mental health. Rocky also talked about his growing family with Rihanna. Anticipating their third child, he said, “I hope it’s a girl. I really do. This pregnancy is so different from the other two. I feel like it’s going to be a girl. I need that.”

Just days after the interview, Rihanna confirmed the birth of their daughter, Rocki Irish Mayers, on Instagram, giving fans a rare and joyful glimpse into their family life.
