A$AP Rocky has always moved differently. Whether it’s music, fashion, or culture, the Harlem-born rapper has never stayed boxed into one lane for too long. Now, as the rap and hip hop world digests his latest album, Don’t Be Dumb, a new conversation is starting to form around what could come next.

Instead of focusing only on charts and features, Rocky is letting people see another side of him, one that’s thinking bigger than the stage. In a recent interview, the artist spoke candidly about real-life struggles that hit close to home, especially for everyday New Yorkers.

It’s not a campaign announcement by any means, but the idea alone has fans and critics talking. When a global rap star starts speaking openly about city leadership, community needs, and public responsibility, it naturally raises eyebrows and curiosity.

A$AP Rocky opens the door to politics

During a recent interview with Esquire, A$AP Rocky was asked a question that caught many by surprise: would he ever consider running for mayor of New York City? His answer made it clear that the thought isn’t far-fetched.

“For sure,” he explained. “I think so, there are a lot of political affairs that need to be addressed, changes that need to be made. I think that I would really do well because I’m a guy that’s for the people.”

Rather than speaking in abstract ideas, Rocky focused on everyday frustrations that many New Yorkers know all too well. His comments felt grounded, coming from lived experience instead of political jargon.

“See pot holes, fix ’em. The rates for the trains. Like the train fare just went up to $3, it’s f*cking crazy. Inflation is crazy,” Rocky continued.

Rooted in community and real-life struggles

What stood out most wasn’t ambition; it was familiarity. Rocky didn’t distance himself from struggle or speak from a place of privilege. Instead, he leaned into where he came from and who he represents. “SNAP and welfare and foot stamps and all of these benefits is f***** up because that’s where I derive from. Creating more job opportunities create better health care."

He also pointed to a wider issue that frustrates many voters: broken promises and self-interest in politics. "These are some of the things that most politicians come in promising, but for the most part, a lot of the decisions made by politicians have ulterior motives, and it’s really self-beneficial," he concluded. "For me, I make a really great living off being myself.”

Life after Don’t Be Dumb

Rocky’s comments arrive just weeks after the release of Don’t Be Dumb, his long-awaited fourth studio album. The project brings together voices from across modern rap and hip hop, including Tyler, The Creator, Doechii, and Brent Faiyaz.

While the album keeps Rocky firmly planted in music, his words suggest that his vision stretches beyond entertainment. Whether politics becomes reality or remains a conversation starter, one thing is clear: A$AP Rocky is thinking about impact, not just influence.
