Prince was the kind of musical artist who liked to work with lots of other fantastic musicians. Sure, maybe he liked a record to sound a certain way, but he had earned that right. He was an amazing songwriter, producer, and singer.
One of the performers Prince worked with was Chaka Khan. She has turned his 1979 song, "I Feel for You," into a hit for herself in 1984. In the late 1990s, Prince and Khan joined with Sly and the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham to churn out some tunes, too.
Graham Central Station, a band fronted by Graham (of course), had Prince produce a record for them called GCS 2000. The same day that that album was released, Khan put out Come 2 My House, an album on which Prince was listed as a songwriter, performer, and producer. The Purple One was a busy man.
Chaka Khan implies unheard Prince music will be arriving soon
According to a recent interview Khan did with the Guardian, she and Prince created many songs that have yet to see the light of day, but that is about to change. Khan said some "red tape" needed to be worked through, but a CD featuring the tunes will be released soon.
There was no other information given, and calling new music a CD seems antiquated, but possibly this is more of a full-fledged project than it appears on the surface. One thing is for sure: Let's hope the production value is something Prince would have liked instead of some thrown-together tracks produced for money.
That is not meant to sell Chaka Khan short. She has been a fantastic artist on her own, but it is odd how, after a great artist's death, many new tunes suddenly appear. Not everything a person records is worthy of being heard by a large audience.
Still, Khan was glowing in her praise of the performer. She said in the interview, "Prince just grabbed ideas out of the air and left you wondering: 'Where did you get that?' He was a really deep and beautiful thinker. We worked on a lot of songs, and they’re all going to be on a CD I’m soon to release – there’s a lot of red tape that’s been in the way, but we’ve cleared it. It’s him and me and Larry Graham, together."
