Chappell Roan attempts to clarify recent fiasco with 'I do not hate children'

Something happened, and became a global event.

The issue between pop star Chappell Roan and Brazilian football star Jorginho might have no real winners or losers. The whole issue might be one big misunderstanding. The real problem is that an innocent child might have been yelled at by a security guard, and that wasn't warranted.

What appears to have happened was that Jorginho, his wife, Catherine Harding, and the couple's child (a daughter whom Harding had with actor Jude Law) were having breakfast at a hotel in Rio, and Roan was staying at the same hotel. As the family ate, Roan passed by them to go to a different table.

The child wanted to make sure that the person was actually Roan, and, according to Jorginho's Instagram story, the daughter simply walked by Roan's table, smiled, and then returned to her family. After which, a security guard came over and berated Harding for allowing her daughter to "disrespect" and "harass" other people. The guard was also loud and aggressive.

Roan answered in her own Instagram post that she didn't see a daughter or wife, but only Jorginho, though she wasn't clearly claiming the wife and daughter weren't there, only that she didn't see them. Her initial attempt at clarifying the situation went slightly astray, however.

She wrote, "I didn't even see a woman and a child...No one came up to me, no one bothered me...I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child...It's unfair for security to just assume someone doesn't have good intentions when they have no reason to believe, because there's no action even taken."

In a later post, after pushback from fans, seemingly on all sides of the issue, Roan posted, "I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children. Like, that is crazy. I'm sorry to the mother and child, that someone was assuming something, that you would do something, and if you felt uncomfortable, that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that."

Fair enough. Jorginho did mention that Shakira would have handled the situation differently than Roan's security guard did, and maybe that is the case. One would have to know all the parties involved, and therein lies the rub.

Most people making judgments on the entire matter are people like you, dear reader, and me, who are simply reading about what happened without witnessing the situation. The whole mess appears to be a misunderstanding where a child was treated unfairly, as seemingly her whole family was.

Chappell Roan has apologized, and hopefully Jorginho and his family will accept that. Unfortunately, the daughter will have a lifelong negative memory of what happened, and that is by far the worst part.
