When I think of the consummate songwriter, I’m probably not alone when I think of Adam Duritz from Counting Crows. His songs, which delve deep into the romantic heart of being human and meld pop and folk sensibilities to the most thrilling effect, are beloved by many, and he has continued to write since he became famous in the 1990s.
Well, Counting Crows, who burst on the scene in 1993 with their number five hit single, “Mr. Jones,” are coming out with their eighth studio album, Butter Miracle: The Complete Sweets!, and touring the nation from May through August.
Duritz sings on the latest single, “Spaceman In Tulsa,”“Doesn’t anybody wanna to be a rock and roll queen? / Leave ‘em laughing when you wanna die / Crazy little dreamer says, ‘Man, I can’t believe I’m still alive." They are best known for their album August and Everything After, featuring ultra-popular songs like “Rain King” and “Round Here,” which they are sure to play on their country tour.
Counting Crows are as American as apple pie
Duritz, who has struggled with depression and dissociative disorder, has been in and out of the music conversation for years, and his new single is as resonant as anything that he and the band have written.
With the imagery of clowns and caterpillars, he has said that the single “is about metamorphosis—the way music breaks down who we were and spins us into something new. It’s about broken lives becoming something better.”
Counting Crows songs, over the years, have soundtracked many people’s evolutions. The magic of a Counting Crows song is the compelling stories couched in music that is more catchy than Bob Dylan's and more relatable than Leonard Cohen's. Duritz is, for sure, one of the greats.
And their upcoming album, Butter Miracle: The Complete Sweets!, promises to deliver, if the new single is any indication. Counting Crows are as American as apple pie and as moody as Billie Eilish, at times.
The band will also be touring Europe and the UK in September and October. They are a band on many people’s bucket lists, and it promises to be an electric live show. Duritz is not only known for his impeccable song composition but also for his moving live performances. If you feel the itch, seize the opportunity to see one of rock' n roll music’s best bands in a city near you this summer and fall.
