There is a magic to Timothée Chalamet right now. If he isn't one of the top five movie stars in the world (the new Leonardo DiCaprio, if you will) then...well, let's just say he is. Because he is.
Chalamet is expected to be nominated for an Academy Award when the noms are announced on Thursday. It would be for the role of Bob Dylan he played in A Complete Unknown. In the flick, the actor not only plays the part of Dylan, but he performs the songs as well. He is excellent. But you already knew, or assumed, all of that.
But if you did see the movie and liked the way Chalamet performed the tunes, it might not be a one-off. On the January 25 edition of Saturday Night Live, the actor will not only be the guest host once again, but he will also be the musical guest. This means if you are still on the proverbial fence about seeing the Dylan biopic, your mind will be made up by SNL.
Timothée Chalamet will bring the laughs and the music on this week's Saturday Night Live
The guess here is that Chalamet is not suddenly going to announce he has recorded an album of original material and is going to do a couple of songs from that. Of course, that possibility cannot be ruled out, but it is extremely unlikely.
More likely, now that it is awards season, and Chalamet is expected to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor and his film nominated for Best Film, he is just trying to drum up support for winning. Not that he needs the victory. He hasn't yet won an Academy Award, but he was nominated in 2017 for Call Me by Your Name. He is only 29 years old and will probably have lots of award-nominated parts in the future.
He might only have one role that allows him to sing, however. Maybe he also wants to prove to those doubters that he did actually perform the Dylan tunes in the film that was him. It is not like Bob Dylan had the voice of Freddie Mercury. Once Chalamet got the inflection down correctly, he was off to the proverbial (award) races.
Again, this all assumes that on Saturday, Chalamet is doing Dylan. He might just surprise us all, and wouldn't that be a great thing?
