The Foo Fighters never have fully failed to entertain. The group began with their own pristine sound, full and sing-along chorus, and clean instrumentation, and has continued that for three decades. Dave Grohl knows what he is doing.

Some of the band's albums, while never entirely what one would call mellow, have felt a bit more introspective. Instead of the bombast of "Monkey Wrench," the band delivered "The Glass." Slightly different versions of the same band. Both songs were brilliant, but the angst was a different vibe.

The band's latest offering, Your Favorite Toy, harkens back to the days of the 1990s, however. Less polished with more of a garage feel, at least as far as the Foo Fighters can take that. It's a fine album, and the band played two songs from the record on Saturday Night Live UK this weekend.

"Caught in the Echo"

First, it was good to see Pat Smear appear. He recently broke his foot, and he would have been forgiven for skipping the gig.

The song's tone is set at the outset. Grohl screams "Do I?" over and over in a way that feels similar to the Beastie Boys' "So What'cha Want." The song propels along with good energy and the same mindset in which Grohl began, but then intentionally slows.

After a brief breakdown, the speed picks back up and kicks to the finish. The track is a rush of adrenaline overall, and a fast-paced and loud winner for three-quarters of it. On the SNL stage, Grohl is the one with the most manic energy, such os the Foo's way of doing normal business, but it works exceedingly well.

"Child Actor"

The song seems to have a slight Britpop sensibility, with a chorus that Ocean Colour Scene would be proud to claim as their own. The verses, though, have a touch of melancholy that makes the track much more beautiful than it needs to be.

That isn't meant as a negative, either. The truth is that that aspect is a bit unexpected, but in a pleasant way.

Throughout the song, Grohl sings "turn the cameras off," which might have likely been directly inspired by those who took a long look at the singer and multi-instrumentalist's life when he had some extramarital issues in the last couple of years. Fair enough, but the only part of the song that isn't elite is the constant repetition of the line, with the line being overly forced.
