Halsey dropped her most recent album, The Great Impersonator, in 2024, and while most of the reviews for the record were good, one in particular wasn't. The Needle Drop's Anthony Fantano offered the brutal critique.
Now, due to a conversation that occurred recently on social media site X, Halsey is letting her thoughts be known about what Fantano had to say, and on the type of critic that Fantano is overall. The issue runs deep, you see.
What Fantano said about the album was that it "main character syndrome," and he gave the record a "decent one out of 10," according to NME.
Halsey drops the truth on one YouTube music critic
Recently, an X user said that FanTano's approach to the review was odd, and was confused about why there was any discussion of the critic's viewpoint. To which FanTano responded, "If they’re more into the review than the album (followed by a laughing emoji)."
That is what appeared to set off Halsey, who has battled medical issues for several years, and that was important in the making of the 2024 album. The singer didn't just offer a "shut up, Fantano," but delivered her thoughts with venom and structure.
She said, "I’m certain my least memorable song will be remembered more fondly and for more time than anything you ever do with your life will be. Everything you say is more 'whiny' and 'edgy' than I was at any point on that album. But at least I had the excuse of going through chemo."
Halsey didn't stop there, however, after Fantano seemingly sarcastically stated he was glad to be noticed by the singer. He was probably best to have said nothing at all.
The performer offered, "Who cares he gave a bad review? I care that a pay for clicks reaction YouTuber can facade as a pro critic and say it’s 'main character syndrome' for an artist to lament her medical suffering on an album (surprise!) about her own life. He’s a raised-by-4chan edgelord bully. Yuck."
Music fans might know that Fantano is also the critic who recently interviewed Olivia Rodrigo. During the exchange, Fantano said he preferred New Order to Joy Division, and Rodrigo agreed. The issue with the observation is that the bands are basically the same, except that the name changed to New Order after the death of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis.
In other words, Fantano's comment appeared to show a lack of real knowledge about Joy Division + New Order, implying that perhaps the quality of his music comments can be called into question, especially as it relates to Halsey.
On the flipside, every person who listens to music has the right to their own opinions. Anthony Fantano might truly not have liked the record. Hopefully, he wasn't simply being contrarian for the clicks it might have given his YouTube site.
