After a lot of social media backlash, alternative hip-hop artist Kid Cudi has cut M.I.A. from his tour. The latter uttered some controversial comments during a show on May 2 in Dallas, Texas. The odd part was the location and what she said.
During her part of the concert, and according to Rolling Stone, the hip-hop artist told the crowd, "I’ve been canceled for many reasons. I never thought I would be canceled for being a brown Republican voter," before adding she wasn't going to perform her song, "Illegal," because "there’s probably one in the crowd."
The crowd watching had a negative reaction to her words, and some fans claimed she then piped in some cheers among all the boos. On Monday, Kid Cudi announced on social media, as reported by Pitchfork, that M.I.A. was no longer part of the tour.
M.I.A. dropped from current Kid Cudi tour
He wrote, "After the last couple shows, I’ve been flooded with messages from fans that were upset by her rants. This, to me, is very disappointing and I won’t have someone on my tour making offensive remarks that upsets my fanbase."
M.I.A. did respond to her being dropped via social media in a somewhat lengthy tweet, which referenced religion and said, "DO NOT GAS LIGHT MY WORDS. THAT IS THE WORK OF SATAN."
The performer does claim to be a Republican, and many take that as her being anti-immigration. To make matters more complicated, M.I.A. doesn't appear to have American citizenship. She is English and Sri Lankan, which complicates matters overall.
Without being a United States citizen, she would not truly be an American, and some might argue that she has no right to push her views on immigration as it relates to the US. Some might argue that immigration is a global situation that one can espouse their views on, no matter where they are.
Still, all politics is local, so people watching from the crowd in a concert are going to relate to what's being said to their relatively local situation.
The bottom line is that if you wanted to see Kid Cudi in concert but were thinking of not going if M.I.A. was connected, that is no longer a concern. After Monday, M.I.A. is no longer touring with Kid Cudi.
