Lita Ford released her autobiography in 2016. As it turns out, she dropped the memoir too soon. Her book was finished being written, at least as far as making new music.
The former Runaways lead guitarist hasn't released a new album since the same year her autobiography came out, and even that record was a "lost recordings" one. But Ford is now back, releasing her first new single in a decade, and a track that appears to be followed by a full LP.
The new track is fitting for Halloween too. It's called "Dracula." Ford says the song is "about an entity that represents seduction and control, eventually draining you of your life and everything in it."
Lita Ford's new song isn't among her best
The question is, is the song worth the long wait for hearing new music from Ford?
The song begins with a screaming guitar, but that soon gives way to a simple rhythm pattern that underlays Ford's vocals. The production and sound have a strong 1980s hard rock feel, so if that's your thing, you are in luck.
About a minute and a half into the track, the chorus begins, and it is by far the best part. Everything augments, and the volume is needed. Instead of a rather boring beginning, the chorus changes the narrative of the reaction to the tune.
After that wondrous piece of musical heaven fades, though, the verse that follows is much like the beginning of the track. The bass line is groovy and fun, but there is a definite lack of intensity. At least, not enough of a build for the chorus to pay off as well as it should.
After the second chorus, there is a breakdown of only drums, and Ford asks, "Hey, Dracula. Do you want my phone number?" Clearly, it's supposed to be a bit silly (and in the video Ford mimes a big smile), but the part is too fluffy and isn't necessary.
While the song has parts that are quite good, the overall effect isn't strong enough. The verses needed to be far more energetic, and the mix needed to be better. The single was produced by longtime Lita Ford collaborator Gary Hoey, and if a different producer had been involved, Ford might have had a real winner of a song.
Hopefully, whatever comes next is better for the guitarist. She recently signed with the Italian record label Frontiers Music Srl, and Ford appears to have been working on an album for some time. She deserves success, but if the entire record sounds like "Dracula," that success might not be achieved.
