Judas Priest has been creating heavy metal chaos for 50 years, selling millions of records and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band is fronted by Rob Halford, one of the bravest metal icons simply because he wasn't afraid to announce he was a homosexual in a world run by alpha males.
But Judas Priest is far more than Halford's sexual orientation, of course. The band has produced gems such as "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" and "Breaking the Law," and never stops rocking. Their most recent album, Invincible Shield, was released in 2024 and mostly received positive reviews.
The Birmingham, England band is one of the two metal icons from the city, too. The other is Black Sabbath. Sabbath helped inspire Priest, but Priest has done the same for hundreds of metal bands that followed.
Tom Morello will co-direct a new documentary about Judas Priest
The group will have a new documentary coming out at some point in the future, but production is already underway. The project will have co-directors, but one of them will be Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello. The other director will be documentarian Sam Dunn.
In other words, the film will be in good hands. Dunn knows how to produce a quality documentary, and Morello is one of the best observers of rock history. He has served on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame board and helped induct several hard rock musical artists.
The documentary will be titled The Ballad of Judas Priest, and we are promised an inside look into the band that we have not yet been exposed to. Although 50 years is a lot of ground to cover, that should make the project more worthwhile and fulfilling.
Song Music Vision will produce and release the film, though there is no firm release date, and an unknown distribution outlet. Will it be straight to streaming, and, if so, where? Those details have yet to be announced.
