Olivia Rodrigo's new album seems destined for success, but is it earned?

Is it her best?

Olivia Rodrigo's career will be a fascinating watch. She has now released three albums after dropping you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love this week, but she appears so in control of her career already. The issue sometimes is that an artist who burns extremely bright can dim quickly in the public view.

Just 23, Rodrigo could be on the cusp of long-term greatness that makes her a fixture on the pop-rock stage for decades. Some might have an issue with her foot in each subgenre, though, and true lovers of rock might find her tunes a bit gimmicky and fluffy. It's a trick that few can pull off for many years.

Green Day, for instance, has managed to keep their brand of pop-punk popular for so long because they do take chances at times. The question is whether Rodrigo will also take necessary chances, even if it means eventually turning off a few longtime fans.

Olivia Rodrigo's latest album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, review

Does that start with her latest bon mot? Not really. She's got a collaboration with the Cure's Robert Smith, of course, but "What's Wrong with Me" isn't something dark and moody. There is a poppiness to it that Smith wouldn't have dared on albums like Pornography.

That isn't meant to imply the new track isn't enjoyable. The song is, to a degree. The tune isn't transformative, but it will help sell the record a bit.

Not that Rodrigo needs much help, of course. Her brand of rock-pop borrows from Taylor Swift, clearly, and that isn't meant as a smear. Like Swift, Rodrigo writes her own songs, and she's good at it. One should try making nearly every song into an earworm worthy of the phrase. The trick isn't easy magic.

Several new tracks on the new album are gems. "Stupid Song" is tongue-in-cheek with a bit of a slow build with a nice payoff sonically.

"Maggots for Brains," far more than the collaboration with Robert Smith, actually sounds a bit like an old Cure song, especially at the beginning. Rodrigo pulls it off, even though the chorus is a bit too poppy (she might have chosen to double down on the menace from the opening sequence instead).

"U + Me = <3" is upbeat and happy-sounding with clever lyrics, such as "I like your big sister/She has your same face/And I tried to win her over/With my cynical humor and yacht rock music taste." To be sure, while Rodrigo might be open and honest in her phrasing, she definitely sounds nothing like yacht rock, thankfully.

After this track, things tend to go south, but not as far as the songs' quality. The album is split into a happy phase and then a second half about falling out of love. Through the record are well-written, well-conceived, well-produced bits of rock-pop fun (even through some of the lyrical gloom), and Olivia Rodrigo more than proves she is worthy of all the streams the LP will get.

The final track begins with an acoustic guitar, simple and light. By this point, Rodrigo's narrator is back to feeling completely lost and alone. The tune is beautiful and heart-wrenching. Rodrigo is all grown up.
