If you were a fan (and maybe still are) of the Brit boy group One Direction, the news hasn't been overly good lately. This is especially true as it relates to the death of Liam Payne, who died suddenly after a fall from a balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2024.
While nothing will change that sad fact, there might be some closure for fans coming in 2026. Netflix has announced that a travel series featuring One Direction members Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik will likely be ready to stream sometime in 2026. No official release date has yet been announced.
The storyline will follow a road trip in the United States with Tomlinson and Malik. Malik has a home in Pennsylvania, so maybe the series will start there and go west. Fans have not been given any further information about the trek.
Netflix announces travel docuseries featuring two One Direction members
The two One Direction members will discuss the death of Payne, at least their reactions to it. One can assume that since this is a series, loads of other issues will be talked about, including things not directly related to the group.
In other words, instead of viewers getting a bunch of insight into any One Direction drama and what turned the boy band into one of the more commercially successful musical acts of its time, we will learn a lot more about Tomlinson and Malik's views on things.
Harry Styles and Niall Horan made up the rest of the group, other than Malik, Tomlinson, and Payne, but Styles and Horan are not expected to make appearances on the Netflix docuseries. This means a fairly one-sided approach to anything related to the group, so expect a lot of complaints from other members of the group and fans of Styles and Horan.
The docuseries will be directed by Nicola Marsh, who has some experience working in the documentary music field. Marsh also directed the Demi Lovato doc, Child Star.
One Direction sold over 70 million records during the 2010s and has surpassed 20 billion streaming listens. The Netflix docuseries with Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik will have its followers, but expect some criticism as well. Likely, just the way Netflix wants it.
