Pink Floyd drops news fans will love but feels unnecessary

But what is it?

Let's say you are a huge fan of Pink Floyd. If that is the case, you are likely aware of most of their songs (if not all of them), and especially the ones that have ever appeared on an album. Let's also say that you subscribe to many different streaming sources.

If that first paragraph is true, then what you might not need is another compilation album from the band, but that is what fans will get on July 5 when the prog-rock gods drop 8-Tracks, which is exactly the number of tunes on the new album. There might be one reason to buy the vinyl and CD, though.

The compilation will include an extended version of "Pigs on the Wing" from the album Animals. This track was previously made available, but only as part of the 8-track cartridge for the album's original release. If you really love the song, you should buy the compilation.

Pink Floyd is dropping new compilation in July (but does it matter?)

There is a modern problem with compilations, however. That is, people who subscribe to one of the many streaming services can create their own compilations every day of their lives. That the new Pink Floyd one was edited by Steven Wilson so that there are no real breaks between songs is cool, but is it enough to sell merchandise? Maybe not.

Will the vinyl sound better than anything you would hear on a digital streamer? Sure, but the CD version won't be any better. Only one aspect keeps 8-Tracks from being a pure money-grab.

That is, Pink Floyd has produced a lot of compilation albums over the decades. The difference is that doing it in a world where people can pick and choose at will makes buying band-created compilations nearly meaningless. Why buy the compilation when you can figure out which songs are on it (the tracklist is below) and make your own on Amazon Music or Spotify?

None of this is to say anything negative about Pink Floyd (heaven forbid), but the climate of listening to music has changed since the band released A Collection of Great Dance Songs in 1981. Fans might love most of the songs on a compilation but not all of them, and will revert to creating their own playlists. That's how the modern world works.

Side one of 8-Tracks:

1. "One Of These Days" (from Meddle)
2. "Wot's… Uh The Deal" (from Obscured By Clouds)
3. "Money" (from The Dark Side Of The Moon)
4. "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2" (from The Wall)

Side two

1. "Wish You Were Here" (from Wish You Were Here)
2. "Time" (from The Dark Side Of The Moon)
2. "Comfortably Numb" (from The Wall)
4. "Pigs On The Wing" (from Animals 8-track cartridge)
