Many phenomenal rock albums were released in 1994. Hollywood-style glam metal had lost its allure, and fans of metal and hard rock were searching for something new to quench their taste for loud, aggressive music.

Established bands like Soundgarden continued to rule the airwaves while newcomers like Korn ushered in a new sound.

Let’s look at four of the best rock albums turning 30 years old in 2024. All are worth a listen for you today.

Four great rock albums turning 30 years old in 2024

Alice In Chains - Jar of Flies

The acoustic EP represented a shift in sound for the grunge giants, arriving after their critically acclaimed album Dirt came out in September 1992. “After playing loud music for a year, we’d come home, and the last thing we wanted to do was crank up the amps right away,” drummer Sean Kinney said.

Guitarist Jerry Cantrell sang lead vocals on "No Excuses" and "Don't Follow” and harmonized with singer Layne Staley on the EP’s other songs. The dark, moody lyrics — especially in “Nutshell” — allude to depression, loneliness, and isolation. They can be interpreted as referencing Staley’s reaction to newfound fame and haunting descent into drug addiction. The melancholic EP was Alice In Chain’s first release to crack the Billboard 200 chart; it debuted at Number One.

Soundgarden - Superunknown

The band’s fourth studio album came out after they toured to support Badmotorfinger (released in 1991). More time was dedicated to recording songs for Superunknown than previous albums, according to guitarist Kim Thayil. The album’s length — 70 minutes — came about because "we didn't really want to argue over what should be cut,” singer Chris Cornell once noted.

Dark lyrics on songs like “Let Me Drown” and “Limo Wreck” reflect the musicians’ maturity as a band, as they expound on themes of trauma, drug use, depression, suicide, and death. “There’s an eeriness in there, a kind of unresolvable sadness or indescribable longing that I’ve never really tried to isolate and define and fully understand,” Cornell said. “But, it’s always there. It’s like a haunted thing.”

The album helped Soundgarden, long known as grunge pioneers, break through to a more mainstream audience. Critics included it in lists of the greatest albums of the year, the decade, and all time.

Dinosaur Jr. - Without a Sound

The alternative rock band’s sixth studio album became their most commercially successful release. It made Guitar World’s list of 50 Iconic Albums That Defined 1994.

Singer/guitarist J Mascis confessed that the death of his father during the album’s recording influenced his songwriting. Indeed, his lyrics on songs like “Feel the Pain” and “Outta Hand” allude to the pain felt after the loss of a loved one. It’s easy to get lost in the music while listening to the band’s trademark blend of distorted guitars, pedal effects, and wall of sound.

Dinosaur Jr. is credited with influencing both their peers and upcoming rock acts. This list includes Nirvana, Pixies, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, and My Bloody Valentine.

Korn - Korn

The up-and-coming nu-metal band’s lyrics focused on disturbing themes like bullying, child abuse, and drug use. Korn’s members played simultaneously while recording songs rather than recording each instrument separately, as many bands do.

The album was well-received by fans and critics alike. It inspired a new generation of metal bands such as Slipknot and Sepultura. A writer for Kerrang! said grunge band Nirvana “provided the soundtrack to the trials of disaffected youth,” but Korn's debut album “was the manifestation of disaffected youth itself.” Its grooves, hip-hop elements, and depressive lyrics were often imitated but never duplicated in subsequent years. Over 10 million copies of Korn had been sold by the album’s 25th anniversary in 2019.

I’ve been fortunate to see all of the bands listed here perform live at various points in their careers. It was amazing to see Alice In Chains alternate playing face-melting rock and the more mellow songs from Jar of Flies. Unfortunately, I saw Soundgarden only in their early years, before they were massive grunge superstars. Several friends have shared with me that Dinosaur Jr. shows are the loudest they’ve attended. I finally witnessed this myself when I saw the band perform twice within two years. I caught Korn at the beginning of their rise to stardom, and then again in 2021.
