Emo legends Sunny Day Real Estate tease first new music in 10 years
By Matt Dargan
Emo legends Sunny Day Real Estate are up to something. Earlier today the band posted a mysterious teaser video across its various social media accounts of a hand drawing a steamship with an unknown song playing in the background.
It's unclear at this time if the video is teasing a new record, EP, or tour, but all signs point to new music on the way for the beloved Seattle band in 2024.
If Sunny Day Real Estate indeed have a new album dropping in 2024, it will be the first full-length the band has released since 2000's The Rising Tide. Following a tour in support of that record, the ban disbanded for a second time and would not reunite again until 2009.
Sunny Day Real Estate haven't released new music since 2014
During that second hiatus, lead singer/guitarist Jeremy Enigk and drummer William Goldsmith formed The Fire Theft with former Sunny Day Real Estate and current Foo Fighters bass player Nate Mendel and released two albums during that time period.
The third reunion began in 2009 with all original members participating in a lengthy tour that saw the band perform tracks from their first two studio albums in addition to new music live on select dates. The band attempted to record new material while working at Dave Grohl's studio 606, but tensions within the band resulted in Sunny Day Real Estate breaking up once again, and most of what was recorded left without having vocals tracked.
One of those tracks with vocals, a song titled "Lipton Witch," was released in 2014 for Record Store Day as part of a split seven-inch with the band Circa Survive. That seemed to be the end of the Sunny Day Real Estate story until recently.
Recent tours and a tease of new music
2022 saw Sunny Day Real Estate reunite again with festival dates and a steady touring cycle that has kept the band on the road ever since. The question on most fans' minds was if and when the band would release new music. Today's teaser hints at a fifth album coming in the near future.
