Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter. Who would've thought that when she embarked on her solo career, it would be the beginning of something truly immaculate? Beyoncé's body of work speaks for itself for several reasons.
Her albums tell a story. They take you on a journey (in which some use her music as the soundtrack of their lives). She shows that she's not afraid to adapt to what's current and the best thing is from Dangerously In Love to Renaissance, listeners can her maturity and growth as an artist.
With the highly anticipated Cowboy Carter, let's take a look at her catalog and rank each of Bey's albums. (Note: No live albums will be included.)
Ranking every Beyoncé album from least to greatest
8. The Lion King - The Gift (2019)
It was extremely difficult putting this list together but it was done so let's get started. As mentioned, Beyoncé doesn't have a bad album. It's pretty much based on one's preference, connection to each album, etc. The Gift is Beyoncé's love letter to Africa and its culture.
This album celebrates, love, parenthood, strength, courage, self-reflection, self-worth, and awareness. It was an extremely smart decision to serve this album as the soundtrack for the live-action film The Lion King....the best thing that came from the movie but that's a different story for a different day. The visual film for the album, Black Is King, can be found on Disney+.
Favorite Songs: Bigger, Mood 4 Eva, Already, My Power
7. I Am...Sasha Fierce (2008)
I Am...Sasha Fierce was unique in so many ways. This album was our introduction to Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé's alter ego. Up until this point, Beyoncé's persona and music were safe, pure, and innocent to say the least. There's another album where Beyoncé takes it there 100 percent (we'll get to it), but this album peeled back the layers for what's to come.
What was enjoyable about this album was the track placement. One song you get "Beyoncé" and then you get "Sasha Fierce" the next. Beyoncé's ability to provide two unique styles on one album is even more proof that she's the one.
Favorite Songs: Diva, Single Ladies, Video Phone
6. Dangerouly In Love (2003)
Welp. The top five Beyoncé albums are here. Bey Hive...don't attack the messenger. Dangerously In Love, the album that started it all, is number six. Around 2001, it was almost inevitable that a solo run was on the horizon for Bey.
With Destiny's Child on ice until 2004, Beyoncé made the decision to make a solo album. What an amazing decision it was. With amazing samples, versatility, range, catchy tracks, and dope collaborations, Beyoncé made her mark early on. At this point, she was Beyoncé Knowles, but that would soon change (hold on to this thought).
Favorite Songs: Baby Boy, The Closer I Get To You, Daddy, Baby Boy & Me, Myself & I
5. 4 (2011)
This project is in the middle because this is where Beyoncé reached peak maturity. The vocals, the lyrics, and the body of work are just astonishing. This album is personal for Beyonce because 4 is an important number to her.
4 is the day Beyonce was born, the day her mother was born, and the date of her wedding. This album oozes fun, love, strength, and girl empowerment. It's also no surprise listeners could feel Beyoncé glow through this album because she was pregnant with Blue Ivy during the production of this project. Almost positive this is Bey's personal favorite album of hers.
Favorite Songs: End Of Time, Party, Run The World, Best Thing I Never Had
4. B'Day (2006)
B'Day is high up on this list for two reasons: Beyoncé conquered the Sophmore Jinx and this is the first time Beyoncé released a video for every track. B'Day is a personal favorite because this was Bey's "crowning moment".
What makes B'Day unique is she took the criticisms from Dangerously In Love and made gold. This album has it all: funky beats, fun lyrics, and amazing track placement. The visuals were absolutely fun and youthful. B'Day served as a tease for one album that cemented her legacy (once again, hold on to this thought).
Favorite Songs: Deja Vu, Freakum Dress, Get Me Bodied, Resentment, Upgrade U
3. Renaissance (2022)
Before Renaissance, the BeyHive proposed the question: what else is there left to do Beyoncé? The most decorated female superstar of all time and just recently broke the "most Grammy wins" record. Seriously? What else is left? The response? Act 1: Renaissance.
There are literally no words to describe this body of work. This album was right on time with everything that's going on in the world. It's free-spirited, carefree, and just an overall good time. The first act of Beyoncé's trilogy is an open letter to the ballroom culture (watch Paris Is Burning to see the inspiration). It's ballroom, it's disco, is razzle, dazzle, glitz, and glam. Beyoncé tapping into different genes is truly remarkable. With the pending release of Cowboy Carter, Bey is issuing a reminder as to why she's the best.
Favorite Songs: Cuff It, Church Girl, Plastic Off The Sofa, Break My Soul, Energy
2. Beyoncé (2013)
“People don't make albums anymore. They just try to sell a bunch of little quick singles. And they burn out, and they put out a new one, and they burn out, and they put out a new one." This is a quote from Beyoncé's Life is But A Dream documentary on HBO. When Bey took this shot at the music industry, we should've been prepared for what was to come.
When it comes to albums, promotion is key. Promotion is how you get the audience ready for the album release. Without promotion, no one cares. That's not the case with Beyoncé's self-titled album. Only the Queen Bey can release a full album with visuals after Scandal went off. Remember when it was mentioned that in 2003, she was still Beyoncé Knowles? This is where she became "BEYONCÉ". The legacy was cemented. This album is calm, sexy, raunchy, and mature beyond belief. Beyoncé put her all into this project. However, there's one album left that stands the test of time.
Favorite Songs: Drunk In Love, Partition, Rocket, Flawless, Mine, 7/11 (Platinum Edition)
1. Lemonade (2016)
When life gives you lemons, make Lemonade. That's the inspiration behind Beyoncé's best album. Her lemons? Self-doubt, insecurities, infidelity, injustice, and being good enough. What an amazing work of art. This album had the entire music world buzzing. Beyoncé! Getting cheated on? How?
Beyoncé's Lemonade is centered around the infidelity of Jay-Z and what was so beautiful about this album is she allows listeners into her private life. This album gave us a front-row seat to Beyoncé: not the superstar, but the human.
Lemonade is Beyoncé in her rawest form. From lyrics such as "you not messing with no average chick boy," "suck on my balls..pause. I've had enough" and the infamous "Becky with the good hair," this album was the talk of 2016. Empowerment, finding your light again, fighting against injustice, strength, perseverance, this album has it all. She also made Red Lobster very popular that year....if you know, you know.
Favorite Songs: Formation, Hold Up, Sorry, Freedom
