Five overplayed songs from the 1990s that continue to rot our brains
By Lee Vowell
The 1990s were a blast! OK, the decade was not as good musically as the previous three decades, but there was so much pressure to be good, right? At least, there was grunge and that was good, but for the most part, pop music was drivel.
Some of the worst sins committed upon the general music listening public happened during the 1990s. Record execs needed their hits and they needed their money. They even turned some good musical artists into slime by having them write or make songs that were below them.
Five of those songs are as follows. Maybe you have fond places for them in your heart, and that is your right. You can argue back if you wish. For most of the rest of us, however, we have to live with hearing these tunes against our will. It's a bit like living in purgatory.
Five overplayed songs from the 1990s which remain horrible after all these years
"Truly Madly Deeply" - Savage Garden
The song is wholesome enough. Darren Hayes missed his family and was away from his family for a long time so that the band could record songs for their debut album. Goodness, the horribleness. Maybe he could have flown back a bit more times. Other people might be taken hostage, but Hayes was trying to make songs that would make him money. Life is hard, yo!
Of course, his words and this wretched song turned into one that people would send to their beloveds and speak the words that they could not speak. Words as brilliant - please see the sarcasm here - as "Well, I wanna stand with you on a mountain/I wanna bathe with you in the sea/I wanna lay like this forever/Until the sky falls down on me."
What is it then? Lay with the person forever how? On a mountain? On a sea? It's beginning to sound a bit Seussian and that's just weird. Also, why is the sky falling down on him at the end? If it's an REM reference, fine. Otherwise, weird.
