The annual tradition of debating who should be part of the XXL Freshman Class cover for 2026 has changed over the years. The introduction of platforms like social media, TikTok, streaming services with Spotify, and algorithms taking over playlists has changed the conversation in hip-hop.

What hasn't changed is that the XXL Freshman Class continues to help to introduce hip-hop fans to newer up-and-coming artists on the scene. Many legendary covers from the XXL Freshman Class have highlighted some of the brightest up-and-coming stars in rap history, including Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Travis Scott, Future, Wiz Khalifa, 21 Savage, YG, and Meek Mill, among others.

The 2026 class could end up being one of the most stylistically diverse groups in recent memory. With hip-hop continuing to expand globally, this year’s class may feature artists from international scenes like the UK alongside breakout stars from across the United States.

Who will make the 2026 XXL Freshman Class?

The genre itself has also become more fragmented than ever, with rage, plugg, trap, conscious rap, melodic hip-hop, and experimental underground sounds all competing for mainstream attention.

Unlike previous eras of hip-hop, when a single dominant sound controlled the genre, today’s rap landscape is far more fragmented. Internet collectives, underground scenes, and regional movements can develop massive fanbases independently without needing radio support or major label backing.

While some artists appear to be near-locks for the cover, others have emerged as dark horse candidates capable of making a late push before the official class is announced this summer.

From viral internet risers to underground favorites and Southern breakout stars, here are the artists most likely to make the 2026 XXL Freshman Class.

Slayr

Philadelphia native rapper, songwriter, and producer Slayr became one of the hottest rising names in underground rap during late 2025 following the release of his breakout mixtape Half Blood and its deluxe edition Bloodluxe in early 2026.

Slayr blends bright, lush rage production with melodic autotuned vocals and catchy hooks that feel more accessible to mainstream audiences than some of the harsher, blown-out sounds currently dominating parts of the underground rage scene.

Just in this past few months, Slayr hit one million monthly listeners on Spotify for the first time.

Earlier this month, Slayr also earned his first Lyrical Lemonade music video placement, which is another major sign that his crossover into the mainstream may already be underway.

If there’s one artist from the underground rage scene with legitimate superstar potential over the next few years, Slayr feels like one of the safest bets.

EsDeeKid

There may not be a hotter or more mysterious rising artist in the UK trap and rage scene right now than Liverpool native rapper and songwriter EsDeeKid.

EsDeeKid exploded onto the global hip-hop radar in 2025 following the release of his breakout mixtape Rebel, which gained massive traction online throughout last summer and fall. Tracks like “4 Raws,” “Phantom,” and “LV Sandals” featuring Fakemink and Rico Ace helped push his name far beyond the UK underground and into international rap conversations.

"Rebel" now has well over 1 billion streams globally on Spotify, and it charted for multiple weeks on the Billboard UK Albums Chart in 2025 and early 2026.

While EsDeeKid may not be a guaranteed lock for the 2026 XXL Freshman Class, it would be surprising if XXL didn’t at least strongly consider him for this year’s cover.

Hurricane Wisdom

Florida native Hurricane Wisdom has quickly emerged as one of the fastest-rising artists in melodic Southern hip-hop. The Havana, Florida rapper, singer, and songwriter has built a rapidly growing fanbase online and across streaming platforms through his emotionally-driven songwriting, infectious hooks, and melodic vocal delivery.

Tracks like “Patience” featuring NoCap and “Lil Hurricane” helped introduce Hurricane Wisdom to larger mainstream audiences, while songs like “Giannis” and “Drugs Callin” further showcased his ability to blend vulnerable storytelling with catchy melodies.

His sound fits naturally into the melodic trap lane popularized by artists such as Rod Wave, Lil Durk, and Juice WRLD, but Hurricane Wisdom’s authenticity and emotional songwriting have helped him stand out in an increasingly crowded space.

At this point, it would be surprising if Hurricane Wisdom was not heavily considered for the 2026 XXL Freshman Class.

Trap Dickey

South Carolina rapper and songwriter Trap Dickey has rapidly emerged as one of the breakout names in Southern hip-hop during 2026. The newest signee to Top Dawg Entertainment, better known as TDE, scored one of the biggest Southern rap records of the year so far with “Down South” featuring Paper Route's Key Glock.

Trap Dickey’s rise is a reminder that years of consistency in the underground can eventually lead to major opportunities. After spending years building a loyal fanbase through mixtapes and independent releases, his momentum has finally started translating to a wider mainstream audience.

He capitalized on that momentum quickly following his TDE signing and the success of “Down South” by releasing his studio mixtape The Ville. The project featured major collaborations with DaBaby, BigXthaPlug, K Camp, and Key Glock, helping generate some of the biggest records of Trap Dickey’s career so far, including “LA Nights,” “Blue Devils,” and “Down South.”

fakemink

Another rapidly rising artist emerging from the UK underground is Essex native Fakemink. The 21-year-old artist broke into the global hip-hop conversation in a major way during 2025 following the viral success of “LV Sandals” alongside fellow UK breakout star EsDeeKid.

However, Fakemink’s momentum had already been building well before “LV Sandals.” He first began attracting wider attention after the release of his 2023 debut studio album London’s Saviour, which helped establish him as one of the more unique voices coming out of the UK underground scene.

Earlier this week, fakemink released his sophomore studio album titled "Terrified ." after his controversial Rolling Loud set performance in Orlando earlier this past month. This comes just a few months after fakemink released his eighth EP "The Boy who cried Terrified ." on his 21st birthday.

Fakemink’s growing influence has already earned him co-signs from major artists across both hip-hop and pop, including Drake, Yeat, Clairo, and Yung Lean.

With his genre-blending sound and rapidly growing global audience, Fakemink appears poised to become one of the next major stars emerging from the UK rap scene.

Jim Legxacy

The 2026 XXL Freshman Class could ultimately reflect the growing international influence of UK rap more than any previous year. While artists like EsDeeKid and Fakemink have received much of the mainstream attention, more underrated names such as Jim Legxacy may deserve just as much consideration.

Jim Legxacy earned widespread critical acclaim following the release of his XL Recordings debut mixtape "black british music". The project showcased his versatility across multiple genres and styles, blending elements of jerk, trap, rage, pop rap, and alternative R&B into one of the more creative releases to emerge from the UK underground in recent years.

What separates Jim Legxacy from many of his peers is his songwriting ability and vocal versatility. His emotionally-driven hooks, layered production choices, and genre experimentation have helped him develop a dedicated fanbase while also attracting growing industry attention.

YKNIECE

The Atlanta female rap wave has been a huge movement within the trap subgenre in hip-hop in this past year. Viral records like "WHIM WHAMIEE" with Pluto and YKNIECE, Bunna Summa from BunnaB, and Im So ATL from Bankroll Ni, have ushered in a new era of female rappers from The ATL.

Few artists from that movement have built momentum as quickly as YKNIECE.

YKNIECE has seemingly been everywhere in this past few months, including jumping on the remixes of two of the most viral trap hits in 2026, DaBaby's "POP DAT THANG" and Trim's "BOAT REMIX". Her emphatic delivery, confident presence, and energetic performances have helped her develop one of the fastest-growing fan bases in Atlanta rap.

This comes after a 2025 run that saw YKNIECE take over the hip-hop and notch spots on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, including the aforementioned "WHIM WHAMIEE" with Pluto and Metro Boomin's vintage Atlanta trap hit "Take Me Thru Dere".

With her growing mainstream visibility and strong connection to Atlanta’s current rap movement, YKNIECE feels like a legitimate contender for this year’s freshman class.

Belly Gang Kushington

Few artists have taken over Atlanta’s strip club and trap scene as quickly as Georgia rapper and songwriter Belly Gang Kushington. After joining Lil Wayne as an opener on his "Tha Carter VI Tour" in 2025, Belly Gang Kushington quickly transformed regional momentum into one of the hottest buzzes in Southern hip-hop.

As of the April 2026 chart list, Belly Gang Kushington ranked inside the top 10 for the most plays on Atlanta strip club playlists for the previous month, March 2026 (according to Billboard).

His collaboration with YKNIECE, “Friends Do (Remix),” has become one of the defining Atlanta trap records of the year, dominating both local radio and club rotation throughout the city.

Belly Gang Kushington’s momentum has continued to grow nationally as well, earning him recognition as Billboard Hip-Hop’s Rookie of the Month for March 2026. If his current trajectory continues, XXL may have a difficult time leaving him off the cover this summer.

BunnaB

The second Atlanta female rapper featured on this list is rising Georgia artist BunnaB, whose breakout success over the past year has helped cement Atlanta’s current wave of women in trap music as one of hip-hop’s defining movements.

The “Bunna Summa” rapper and songwriter exploded in popularity during the summer of 2025 thanks to her energetic delivery and nostalgic early-2000s Atlanta club sound, which quickly resonated across streaming platforms, TikTok, and Southern rap circles.

"Bunna Summa" peaked at No. 15 on the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Billboard chart and No. 27 on the Billboard US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in 2025.

She has continued building on that momentum throughout 2026 with a steady stream of successful singles, maintaining more than three million monthly listeners on Spotify while earning major playlist placements across Apple Music, YouTube Music, and other streaming platforms.

Tracks like “Bunna Summa,” “Hoes Be Mad,” “Innit,” and “Mad Again” have all surpassed 20 million Spotify streams, while “Bunna Summa” itself has already crossed 60 million streams in under two years.

10th Spot: H3adband

Voting for the fan-selected 10th spot on the XXL Freshman Class has become one of hip-hop’s biggest annual online debates.

This year’s potential candidates for the final spot appear especially competitive, but Louisiana rapper H3adband stands out as one of the strongest choices thanks to his viral momentum, high-energy sound, and growing popularity on TikTok and streaming platforms.

"BOO" launched H3adband's career into the stratosphere as of late 2025 and early 2026. It was the Louisiana rapper's first Billboard charting hit, peaking at No. 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart in the US.

Following the success of “BOO,” H3adband signed with HitMaker in early 2026 and has continued building momentum with releases such as “She Can Get It” featuring DaBaby. H3adband also opened on DaBaby's Be More Grateful Tour in early 2026, getting to put on shows in over a dozen cities across North America in the United States and Canada.

If fan engagement and internet popularity ultimately decide the 10th spot this year, H3adband could have a legitimate path toward making the freshman class.
