What did he do instead?

Last week, Rod Stewart was scheduled to play a show in Chula Vista, California, but he chose to cancel the gig, and he cited an upper respiratory infection for doing so. Was he completely truthful about that? Some fans who had purchased tickets might be asking.

The issue was that soon after canceling the gig, Stewart posted on Instagram that he was on a plane headed to Boston to watch his favorite World Cup team, Scotland, play their first match. He didn't appear to be ill, and in fact, he was in fine voice while speaking on the post and then chanting, "No Scotland, no party."

Following that match on Saturday, which Scotland won 1-0 against Haiti, for those keeping score at home, Stewart was scheduled to play Colorado's Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater on Monday and Tuesday, but those events were postponed, too. The reason given was that Stewart needed "vocal rest."

Did Rod Stewart choose the World Cup over his own fans?

Stewart fans who bought tickets for all the events, planned their personal schedules around when the icon was set to do a concert, only to have those plans changed when Stewart canceled or postponed the events, might feel miffed watching the singer cheer at the World Cup.

Did he choose real football over his fans? Maybe not, but the fans might feel differently. It's kind of like having a plan to have dinner with a friend, having them cancel because they don't feel well physically, and then seeing posts on social media that they are later at a party having a good time.

Moreover, it would be like a person planning on having that friendly dinner and having already paid for the expensive meal, only to have it not happen. One might feel hurt, and Rod Stewart fans have a right to be.

Ultimately, Stewart doesn't really need to keep making money from tours and traveling anywhere he doesn't have to go. His net worth is reported to be $300 million. If he does concerts, it's because he wants to hear the applause, but he no longer has to prove himself as an entertainer.

The question fans might ask, though, is why Rod Stewart even scheduled the concerts anyway, if he really just wanted to go to see the World Cup (if that is, indeed, what the situation is)? The World Cup has been scheduled for some time, though maybe Stewart wasn't exactly sure when Scotland would be playing. We will have to see what happens when Scotland plays next, which is on Friday.
