Fans of the Who likely already know that drummer Zak Starkey, who was either fired or not fired by the band in 2025, is back jamming with vocalist Roger Daltrey and, presumably, guitarist Pete Townshend in a rehearsal. No current shows are scheduled for the group.
But they might be in 2027, at least according to what Daltrey hinted during a recent solo show. The singer was addressing Starkey's return and said that the issue was that the drummer didn't have an easy time while touring, though Daltrey gave no details to the audience, which would have been weird.
Then Daltrey said the quiet part out loud: "We love Zak...Sometimes the road doesn't love Zak. It gets on top of him, so it becomes difficult, but we love him. We did the rehearsal to see if we can possibly do shows next year, still hit the notes, still get the drive. Who music demands an incredible amount of drive, and without that, it would be like Herman's Hermits without Herman."
Roger Daltrey implies the Who could be touring again in 2027
So there, fans have it. If nothing else, the Who, a band that's been around for more than 60 years, is thinking of doing another tour. What would seem clear is that Daltrey and Townshend could play together without any need to rehearse because they have been together for so long. The iconic duo also knows what to expect from Starkey, since he's mostly been with the band since 1996.
As Daltrey has pointed out, the Who simply is never going to be the same after losing original drummer Keith Moon to his death in 1978. No band would be the same without a drummer the quality of Moon. His style fit the band, too, of course, but his acumen for doing far more than keeping the beat was legendary.
Starkey, the son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, is a very good drummer as well. He can find work outside the Who and has performed with musical acts such as Oasis and Johnny Marr. He is respected, though not at the same level that Keith Moon was.
None of that truly matters because Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend have continued without Moon for nearly 50 years. The band doesn't make many new albums, but their concerts are still can't-miss shows. Starkey is a good fit for them, and very few people would be going to see the drummer anyway.
The real story is that the Who have had a t least one rehearsal again. That implies a new tour soon.
