Wilco is one of the defining alternative rock bands of the 1990s and 2000s. They transcended genre and easy categorization, and delivered some of the most acclaimed albums of their era. The band's "golden age" happened to align with the tenure of multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett.
Bennett was a founding member of Wilco in 1994. He played keyboards, guitars, drums, percussion and any other instrument you can think of on the band's first four albums. After the release of 2001's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, however, Bennett was fired. The tensions that arose between him and frontman Jeff Tweedy proved too great, and the musician was booted right before Wilco's biggest success.

The source of the aforementioned tensions are varied. Tweedy claimed that Bennett attempted to produce Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in addition to be an instrumentalist and co-writer, and clashed with the rest of the band when Jim O'Rourke was brought in to replace him. Then there was also the matter of Bennett's alleged activities outside of Wilco.
Sources close to the band told Magnet Magazine that Bennett's drug use worsened during this era, and his desire to produce for other artists left the other members concerned that he was "whoring out the Wilco name" in an effort to make extra cash. It's worth noting, however, that Bennett denies these allegations in the same 2002 article.
The instrumentalist claims that the truth behind his firing was much less dramatic. He told Magnet that he simply wanted to push the band's sound into a more uptempo direction, but his attempt to do so clashed with Jeff Tweedy's vision. "I tried to force an agenda," he said. "I wanted to make a record that had more of the uptempo pop songs that got cut off the record. But [Tweedy] is the lyricist, and he was trying to make a statement."
Bennett sued Wilco's Jeff Tweedy in 2009

Bennett launched a solo career that resulted in six studio albums and collaborations with artists like Billy Joe Shaver and Sheryl Crow. The Wilco drama seemed to have fallen by the wayside by the late 2000s, but it resurfaced in 2009 when Bennett sued Tweedy for breach of contract. Bennett claimed he needed hip replacement surgery, but could not afford it due to a "pre-existing condition."
Tragically, Bennett died within weeks of filing the suit. Tweedy issued a statement regarding Bennett's death on the Wilco website, in which he recognized the important contributions the musician made to the band. "We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy," Tweedy explained to fans. "We will miss Jay as we remember him – as a truly unique and gifted human being and one who made welcome and significant contributions to the band's songs and evolution."
A documentary about Bennett's life, titled Where Are You? Jay Bennett was released to critical acclaim in 2022.
