The Cure waited a long time to give us the gift of new music and their new album, Songs of a Lost World, was excellent. The record is arguably the band's best since 1989's Disintegration, and that is no slight of albums after that. It's just a statement on how good the new album is.

Here is the good news, Cure fans. According to an interview Robert Smith recently had with Absolute Radio, the band might have two new studio albums out soon. This is on top of the new live record the band will put out called Songs of a Live World. So, while the band is probably nearing the end of its long career, they are finishing with a flush.

The two new albums would be quite different, it seems. One is a "compilation" piece to the record released in November. The other is "late-night studio stuff." What that means is anyone's guess. That makes it seem as if the third album would be full of outtakes, but as Cure fans know, that is not a bad thing.

Robert Smith says the Cure might be about two release two more studio albums

Some of the best songs the band has done, such as "I'm Cold," have been non-single stuff. Of course, that is just a guess. It could be that the "late-night" songs are simply a different take than what the band was trying to accomplish on the other two albums.

Smith said in the interview, "There’s another album which is pretty much ready to go. It’s sort of a companion piece (toSongs of a Lost World). There’s a third one, which is completely different. It’s really kind of random stuff – like late-night studio stuff. But some of it is really good, actually. It’s just very very different."

Of course, any new music by the legendary band is exciting, especially after they delivered a fantastic record in November. If the next two are terrific as well, one might pine for more. One might also beg the question: if the band releases two more studio albums and a live record, will they ever give us more? Time might be running short, but if no music comes after these three, we were at least left with greatness.
