This story isn't about a musical artist pushing back on poor use of one of their songs. This is about pop diva Ariana Grande taking back control over the entire narrative of her music.
Recently, the White House used Grande's song, "Bye," as part of a promotion on an anti-immigration reel on TikTok. The main problem, as far as Grande is concerned, is that not only did she not like someone using her tune without permission, but she didn't agree with the messaging that went along with the song being taken.
Grande initially responded on TikTok to the post by stating, "Please do not use my music in relation to this barbaric, inhumane, heinous nonsense."
Ariana Grande isn't sitting still in her disagreement with the White House using one of her songs
The post by the White House was then muted, and Grande's response was deleted. No apology to the artist was made. As much as the White House has a right to promote its message (and that goes for no matter who is in office, Republican or Democrat), a musical artist has a right to say don't do that.
But Grande, an extremely talented singer and turning into an important actress as well (she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Wicked (Part One), as well as being nominated for 20 Grammys, including three wins), wasn't satisfied with giving verbal pushback to the White House.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the singer-actress launched an immigrant support foundation on Friday. The organization is named The Brighter Day Ahead Foundation.
According to an Instagram post by Grande, the foundation's mission is "to support, protect, and provide resources for our vulnerable friends in need. Through four different funds, we will be supporting handfuls of incredible organizations that provide the safe space and care that is desperately needed by so many right now."
Three of the funds have already helped others financially. Those consist of Protect & Defend (which helps grassroots groups that advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, civil rights, and reproductive justice), Heal & Dream (which increases access to mental health care), and Seen & Celebrated (which is a place for LGBTQ+ stories to be made available for all).
Whether one agrees with Ariana Grande or the White House, and each is free to speak their own views, what cannot be doubted is how aggressively Grande will act to back up what she believes. She is a musical artist who doesn't just speak her truth; she will be financially active in pursuit of that truth.
