Sometimes life just has a way of forcing you to turn your speakers up to 11 and buy fully into the rage of metal. It's cathartic and wonderful. Slightly scary too.
That is what makes music so great. It can elevate our mood, even when we are feeling anxious. The louder and better the song, the more relaxed we might be.
The three songs below are new gems that you might keep on your rotation for months to come. Two are from bands you likely already know, and one you should. Let this be an introduction to their excellent catalog.
New metal songs that should be part of your rotation this week
Der Weg Einer Freheit - "Eos"
This is what a lead single for a new album should sound like. The band's sixth album, Innern, arrives in September and will be worth the wait if the rest is this good. While not exactly Sleep Token, one might wonder if that band's more airy touches are beginning to make an imprint on metal. Let's hope not.
This German outfit doesn't stray too far from their roots, but the orchestral work is a bit different. It does give the song a sense of doom and feels fitting after the heavy reverb of the opening.
In This Moment - "Heretic" (ft. Kim Dracula)
For anyone who has seen In This Moment live, you know that theatrical elements are part of the show in a big way. Vocalist Maria Brink knows how to summon the joy from an audience like a white witch, and she is magical. The band's songs don't always have the same feel, though.
"Heretic" does, however. Kim Dracula adds an angsty step, and this is one of the louder In This Moment tracks in a while, but it's brilliant from bass to lyrics.
Nine Inch Nails - "As Alive As You Need Me To Be"
Trent Reznor has always had many influences, of course, and Depeche Mode is one of them. There is a dash of Dave Gahan and Martin Gore here, but there is little doubt this is a NIN track. Somehow, Reznor and Atticus Finch have been able to continuously make music that is like nothing else but them.
This track also has strong Tron vibes, which makes sense because the single, Nine Inch Nails' first in five years, will be part of the latest iteration of that story, Tron: Ares. Reznor and Finch composed the soundtrack, and based on "As Alive As You Need Me To Be," one might wonder if there are other singles to follow from the film.
