A huge draw.

Eurovision, that European marvel that has spawned groups like ABBA, is coming to the Western Hemisphere, but not the United States. Yet. Instead, it is Canada that will be sending a musical representative to the competition beginning in 2027.

Next year, the competition will take place in Bulgaria, but the location changes every year. Austria held the event in 2026, which saw several countries boycott because Israel was still a participant. The boycott, of course, had to do with the Gaza War.

Canada has had at least one winner before, but while representing a different nation. That was Celine Dion, who participated from Switzerland in 1988.

Eurovision welcomes Canada into the fold

As far as the draw, 130 million viewers watched the Eurovision final this year, down from 160 million, likely due to the boycott, but still a massive audience. That probably means that eventually the United States will be involved, too. That many people watching would mean great things for advertisers.

In Canada, the event will be held on the CBC. Eurovision 2027 will take place in May.

Canada is also the first new country to join the competition since Australia did in 2015. But again, while the US has shows like American Idol and The Voice, they pale in comparison to the huge watchability of Eurovision.

The show also allows for a lot of diversity. Metal bands, and good ones, can be featured, and so can pop performers. The choice of who attends the event is up to each nation, so the feel is almost more like a sports event than a musical competition. Eurovision also allows for a lot of glam and glitter, and each act does their songs live. It's a tough test, but one that can be a career starter.

An interesting aspect is that the winner each year is the nation that sent the performer. For instance, when ABBA won for "Waterloo" in 1974, Sweden was the winner. The same happened in 1988 when Switzerland won with Celine Dion.

Other notable winners include Great Britain with Katrina and the Waves in 1997 for "Love Shine a Light." Italy won with MÃ¥neskin in 2021. In 2026, Bulgaria won with Dara, which is why Bulgaria will host Eurovision in 2027.

In most years, the nation that wins the competition will host the event the following year. If Canada wins in 2027, then Eurovision could be coming to Toronto or Montreal in 2028.
