Green Day is originally from Rodeo, California, so their roots in Bay Area music go back decades. They also aren't afraid to be sports fans. While the assumption is that their favorite NFL team might be the San Francisco 49ers, the band won't be watching the 49ers play in Super Bowl LX, though Green Day will be part of the entertainment.
The NFL announced on Sunday that Billie Joe Armstrong and his two friends will participate in the pregame festivities, just ahead of the national anthem. When Green Day plays, they will be joined by a whole host of previous NFL MVPs. Will it seem odd? Sure, but the band is into it.
According to the Associated Press, Armstrong said, "We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard! We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!"
Green Day to be part of the pregame entertainment at Super Bowl LX
That certainly doesn't sound like something the band would say, but more like a professionally presented press release to make sure everyone is excited for the game. Either way, Green Day will perform, and that should be fun. What we don't yet know is which song(s) they will play.
We do know the 49ers aren't involved. They were thrashed by the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round of the playoffs on Saturday by the Seattle Seahawks. The final score was 41-6, and it felt like it, too. The Seahawks jumped out to a lead by running the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, and that would have been all the points (along with the extra point) that they needed.
The Super Bowl teams aren't yet known, however. The NFC and AFC Championship games still need to be played two weekends before the Super Bowl.
As for Super Bowl LX, it will be held at the home of the 49ers, Levi's Stadium, on Sunday, February 8, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 pm ET. NBC will broadcast and stream the game.
The national anthem will be sung by Charlie Puth (yes, he appears to still be around making music) while Brandi Carlile will sing "America the Beautiful." Coco Jones will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing." The halftime entertainment will be brought to us by the amazing Bad Bunny.
