Jack White has a new album set to be released on July 10. Fans had already heard two songs from the new record, "G.O.D. and the Broken Ribs" and "Derecho Demonico," that were dropped ahead of his Saturday Night Live appearance in early April. Those songs were terrific.
Now, a third single, "Dollar Bill," has been released as part of the 13-track new record, Frozen Charlotte. If the new track was as good as the first two, the implication might be that the latest album could be Jack White's best solo work, and possibly his best since the White Stripes' Elephant in 2003.
So is "Dollar Bill" good, and does it hold up to the first two songs from the record? Well, yes, but it's somewhat different.
Jack White's "Dollar Bill" further implies his new album will be terrific
"G.O.D. and the Broken Ribs" and "Derecho Demonico" were mostly ragers from the start. "Dollar Bills" begins a bit slower, with White playing with his wah pedal and octave tones. He also adds a bit of soft singing before the tune fully kicks in.
About 30 seconds in, we get the revelation that the first two songs from the new record implied: Frozen Charlotte could be an all-out ode to 1970s AOR, and that would be quite the delicious item.
"Dollar Bill" does revert to the beginning about halfway through before the track explodes once again. It's less than three minutes of pure rock brilliance, with a fantastic, dirty, fuzzy solo near the end.
In other words, based on the first three tracks released from the latest album, the new Jack White is going to be a must-own for longtime fans and should attract new ones, too. It's great rock & roll, and not the kind that is often made currently.
