Jack White has had quite a life. The former Mr. Everything of the White Stripes and former furniture refurbisher has been solo for much longer than the White Stripes were making records, and he continues to make great records. But his life has been fuller than just music.
He has made some great friends along the way, opened a record store, got married, and taken his wife's name (now ex-wife), and done a little bit of everything. That trend continued this week as White turned 50 years old on July 9.
A native of Detroit, he is also a big sports fan. His favorite baseball team, one would assume, is the Detroit Tigers, and as part of his birthday celebration, White, his mother, and his current wife, Olivia Jean, took in a baseball game. Coincidentally, maybe, White's good friend, actor John C. Reilly, was throwing out the first pitch at the game.
Jack White has the best birthday week ever
Instead of simply throwing out the first pitch, Reilly led the sparse stadium crowd in a rendition of "Happy Birthday" to White. Apparently, White didn't know Reilly would be at the game and certainly didn't know he would be serenaded.
His reaction was priceless. He was slightly embarrassed, and appreciative nonetheless.
But White's week didn't stop there. He was also given the gift of a cell phone. That might not seem like any big deal, of course, but only White had never owned a cell phone before. He claimed to be a reluctant cell owner, but he also admitted that it would make the seemingly simple things in life a little easier.
Just getting into a parking garage can be complicated without a cell phone. The gift was one from his wife, who then posted photos of White's reaction.
Of course, maybe the highlight of Jack White's year is yet to come. He and Meg White, the duo who made up the White Stripes, will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 8, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Reilly has expressed an interest in being the one who handles the induction, but no official word has been announced.
