14 - Eminem - Curtain Call-The Hits - 15.7m

Rap makes an entry on the list with Eminem and his 2005 collection of hits. It features three new songs on it too. As a special bonus, there was a live version of “Stan” also featuring Elton John and taken from the Grammy Awards show in 2001. Eminem made rap more accessible and popular with a broader audience, which would have helped boost the sales of this album.

13 - Steve Miller Band - Greatest Hits 1974-1978 - 17m

I had no appreciation of the scale of the Steve Miller Band’s popularity. I knew a few hit songs, like “The Joker” and “Abracadabra” but seeing such a huge response to his greatest hits makes me realize how huge they were in the US with their classic rock. Another stark reminder of the higher than anticipated popularity of an artist. It took Celine Dion some time to work out the right song selection for this retrospective album from 1999.  She has got it right given the huge sales figure. Timing wise it was great too, coming just a couple of years after the Titanic movie and that theme song. As you’d expect it is included, with 15 other top songs, on this album.

11 - Elton John - Greatest Hits - 18.6m

This Elton John collection came very early in his long career. It was released in 1974 and had ten of his single releases on there. When you realize just how many more years, albums, and hits were to follow, it’s quite stunning that this is still his second best selling album, behind Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Other complications have followed but this one remains the top of all those.
