4 - Madonna - The Immaculate Collection - 30m
The highest-ranking collection of hits from a solo artist goes to this album from Madonna. Released in 1990, she filled it with her hits from the 1980s and slipped in a new song, “Justify My Love,” perhaps in anticipation of its success. The collection is superb and has the very best of Madonna at that period. That’s a lot of hits and great songs. The collection was also the first album ever to be awarded platinum status by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Joint 3 - ABBA - Gold-Greatest Hits - 32m
There was a long wait for this album to be put together. A range of different ownership rights in various countries has meant a lot of smaller local compilations being released. When those rights could all be brought together in 1992 it was time for this Gold collection of the ABBA hits. Its success shows the ongoing popularity of the band at that time around the world.
Joint 3 - The Beatles - 1 - 32m
A stunning third best of The Beatles album in this top 20. The theme for this album was to collect together 27 songs by the band that were number one singles in the UK and US charts. That’s a massive number, a huge collection, and a brilliant playlist. No wonder it reached 32m sales.
