Outstanding top 20 live albums of the exceptional 1970s ranked based on data

The 1970s may well have been the top era for live music albums. It certainly had many of the best live albums ever released.

9 - The Band - The Last Waltz

Here’s another triple-disc live album that was set up, along with a documentary film,  to mark the final performance of The Band. Given that they also included the likes of Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Emmy Lou Harris, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young on stage for their show, it’s almost guaranteed to be a great record. That may all mean a slightly different tone to some sons but as a farewell and last hoorah, it’s a remarkable album. 

8 - Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous

A personal favorite as it just crackles and buzzes with live atmosphere and sounds. Stories that it was supplemented considerably in the studio afterward have been discounted and denied. If you want raw-edged guitar-led rock and roll with a growling Phil Lynott on vocals and bass, this one from 1978 delivers superbly.  

7 - Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Live Rust 

Neil Young and Crazy Horse had a film of their live tour Rust Never Sleeps. This is the soundtrack to that film. It’s a very good collection of Young and the band at that time in 1978, when it was recorded, before being released the next year. Some powerful songs and performances and great guitar work.
