Phoebe Bridgers never set out to be the "it" girl. She wanted to make brilliant indie pop-rock tracks that brought the listener closer to her, even if that meant keeping some fans at arm's length. After all, Bridgers' songs are for all of us, and many times, people, such as those accosting her at the airport in 2023 when she was trying to catch a flight to her father's funeral.

The singer-songwriter is quite good at her job, but she's a real human being, too. This is what makes her songs so good. She puts a piece of herself into everyone, and while some fans might always try to figure out who the song is about, the magic of Bridgers' excellent gift is that many of her tunes are about us, whether we know it ourselves or not.

Her latest bon mot, "Lost Boys," is the first single from her new album. Lost Weekend, which will be released via Dead Oceans on August 14. One of the many great aspects of the new track is that the song itself is elite, and the video that goes along with it is too. No matter how you listen to the song, you will want to do so many times.

Phoebe Bridgers dazzles on new single, "Lost Boys"

The tune itself begins in Bridgers' classic indie pop way with echoey vocals and a soothing underlay of synths and guitar. The lyrics evolve from the past in East Berlin, a soldier trying to find themselves emotionally, to the narrator and the soldier appearing to reunite, but frustratingly, only temporarily. In Bridgers' musical world, happiness doesn't last long.

It is nearly a minute before the real magic begins. The chorus rises and is arguably the best chorus that Phoebe Bridgers has ever written. The music is beautiful, with vocals that will force you to sing along. While the whole track succeeds, what makes Bridgers one of the best singer-songwriters working is what one hears from the chorus, one of the best pieces of art you will hear this year.

The video shows Bridgers dressed as an elf as part of a fantasy of knights and reality. Besides Bridgers, the key role is played by Skyler Gisondo, who some might remember from The Righteous Gemstones. He's perfect for the part, and the video is a must-watch.
