The first season of Saturday Night Live UK was quite good, but maybe the best part was the collection of musical guests that the show included. Those making the decisions for the show had to know that American audiences would be watching too, and that meant new eyes for some good talent.
That will be the case in season two, it appears. The first three hosts and musical guests have been announced, starting on September 12, when Jeff Goldblum hosts, and CMAT will play the musical part. For episode two, Jamie Demetriou will host, and here is the fun part: Royal Blood will be the musical act.
The rock duo from Worthing have been together since 2011 and produced some underrated gems. The group has only produced five studio albums, but their latest, of course, is due out soon. Many bands go on shows like SNL to sell their wares, especially the ones about to be released. There is literally nothing wrong with that, of course, but they have to deliver the goods.
Royal Blood should become a star in SNL UK's second season
In the case of Royal Blood, that should be a given. Each of the band's bon mots has reached No. 1 on the UK album charts, and for good reason: They are excellent. Gems like "Little Monster" and "Lights Out" are terrific.
The duo's new record will be called Dead Company, which shouldn't be misconstrued as a bunch of covers of Grateful Dead songs, and it will be released on November 13. The first single from the record is "Ten Over Ten," which should not be misconstrued as an homage to Pearl Jam's first album.
The issue is that Royal Blood hasn't quite made the impact in the United States that they should have. Yet. That is why a spot on SNL UK, which is directed to English audiences, of course, but with a heavy nod to fans in the United States, is important. Even if it means selling a few more records, it might mean a word-of-mouth increase in who follows the band.
As far as the other acts in the first three shows, CMAT is the first and a good artist, and is the stage name of Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, an Irish singer who isn't rock, but more folk-pop. The third musical guest of the season will be Rachel Chinouriri, an English singer-songwriter. All involved have merit, but for those who love rock, Royal Blood will be your one to watch.
