Slipknot have reportedly been spending time in the studio working on an unnamed new album. The group began with as many as 50 tracks and has been trimming that number down to a normal album length. But according to longtime band member Jim Root, the new album isn't going to sound like anything else Slipknot has done.
In fact, writing on Instagram, Root said the new record is "gonna hurt some feelings. We’re really experimenting with different approaches."
While it might sound a bit sophomoric for a person in a band to say that the group's new record is going to peeve some fans off, Root isn't wrong, of course. Just like any band that has been making elite sounds for decades, many fans want to hear the same kind of music that they fell in love with. Anything else might feel as if the band is intentionally trying to upset people.
Slipknot's new album could "hurt some feelings"
That isn't happening with most brilliant bands, however. The truth is that musical artists -- real artists -- don't want to keep making the same records. That would imply their intent is simply to sell lots of records and not worry about the quality of the music.
Even though Slipknot might be a metal band and, obviously, nu metal icons, that doesn't mean all they want to do is make exceptionally loud songs. Melodies still matter, even if some of them are buried in a wall of sound. With Slipknot, it is the overall experience of a track, not just a few notes here and there.
Speaking of notes here and there, Jim Root's group will be in many places beginning in the summer of 2027. Slipknot will be doing a run of shows in the Western Hemisphere, as well as one in London. General public tickets for the shows will start on Friday, October 2, at 10 am local time.
Slipknot is already getting pushback for including one opening act: Marilyn Manson. Manson and his mates will perform in London and South America, but because of the singer's various personal accusations (which we won't go into detail here), many fans are asking Slipknot why Manson will be joining them in concert.
The truth is that a band often has less control over who joins them in concert than it has control over making a new album. Slipknot could try to boot Manson from their tour dates, but we all saw what happened with Ed Sheeran and Macklemore, though for different reasons.
