Travis Kelce is many things. He has been a great tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs and has helped KC win multiple Super Bowls. He is a funny podcast host with his brother, Jason. And he is the boyfriend of the most famous entertainer on the planet, Taylor Swift.
What Kelce isn't is much of an actor. He has an awkward delivery, even though he naturally has a funny way about him. To be fair, he doesn't need to act well. He has made more than enough money playing in the NFL, and he only acts if he wants to.
His Saturday Night Live hosting gig in March 2023 was mostly a dud. His role in Netflix's new sequel to Happy Gilmore is worse. The main issue is that Kelce doesn't have a lot to work with. He is simply one of many cameos in Happy Gilmore 2, and his role doesn't add anything.
Taylor Swift gives Travis Kelce and Happy Gilmore 2 high praise
Just don't ask Taylor Swift about the character. Based on a recent Instagram post, she outwardly loves what Kelce does in the film, especially a scene where Bad Bunny's character fantasizes about putting honey all over a tied-up Kelce so that bad things will happen to him. (If you see the film, you'll know it somewhat makes sense.)
Swift wrote on IG, "Happy Gilmore 2 had me cackling and cheering the whole movie! An absolute must watch, 13/10, go watch it on Netflix as soon as humanly possible." She also added a honeypot emoji as an obvious homage to the scene referenced above.
In the sequel, Kelce plays a busboy gone bad. He isn't nice and is everything that Travis Kelce doesn't appear to be in real life. The Chiefs' tight end comes across as a likable person. He isn't in Happy Gilmore 2. Part of the problem might be that Kelce's busboy doesn't seem mean enough.
Still, is Taylor Swift correct in her rating, and should everyone rush to see the movie? Maybe. If you like Adam Sandler films, you should (and probably already have). If you don't, just avoid it.
The film has a lot of gags, some funny moments, and some heart. It's a regular Sandler movie, and that isn't a bad thing. But if you are looking for something a bit more high-brow, your sense might be offended by some of the shenanigans.
