As a health warning before you read further down, certain sections that follow might raise your blood pressure. It’s highly likely some readers will take umbrage at my adding one or more of the top music artists I’ve listed here.
It’s all about opinions, though, and while these artists have all had plenty of love and adoration, they have also slipped much lower in some people's appreciation of them. That's not to say that they aren't still hugely successful as the examples here will show well.
There are lots of reasons why we might go cold on an artist we started off loving. Sometimes it’s the way the artists evolve and change as they grow and mature. They stretch out using different styles and can go to areas we don't like or appreciate anymore. Sometimes, it’s us that have changed as our tastes grow and expand; in other examples, the artists become too successful, and we reckon they have sold out, and we don't want to be a part of that anymore.
Ten top artists we loved and then went cold on
There’s also the point where we see a different side to the artist or one or more band members. They may do or say things we disagree with or we realise they just aren't people we like. On that point, I’ve ignored anyone caught up in major sex or Me Too scandals for this list, it’s not that sort of shock cooling off I’m looking at here. Let’s get down to this list of ten originally loved artists we’ve gone cold on for various reasons.
Coldplay
Coldplay got off to an amazing start with the release of Parachute in 2000. The follow-up A Rush Of Blood To The Head was another superb release in 2002. Some really good songs on both of the albums helped establish the band. Their third album, X&Y, was a longer wait, three years later in 2005. It did mark a shift towards a more corporate or arena-level sound and style.
Now there is no question that the band hasn’t been successful since, quite the contrary. Worldwide tours, amazing crowds, brilliant concerts, and lots of new music keep them very prominent musically. But that third album and step up also triggered a change in how many people viewed the band.
If you mention Coldplay on almost any forum you’ll find many people deriding the band and their music. Bland, commercial, annoying, and formula-driven are common criticisms. Nearly always, there is a point made in the band's defense, they get many plaudits for being brilliant live. I can vouch for that, as can millions of others. But all the same, they do get a very cold approach from many.
