First of all, how has there not been a movie made about the life of Snoop Dogg yet? He has certainly led an interesting life, beginning before he hit it big with the help of Dr. Dre. At least a film project is beginning to take shape about the icon's life.
Snoop Dogg, whose birth name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., will have a big hand in the production, too. He will produce the project and have a say in who gets cast. We now know who will play the role of Snoop: Jonathan Daviss.
Daviss, who also goes by JD, might be best known for his role as Pope Heyward on the Netflix series Outer Banks. That show has five seasons, the last of which will air in 2026 or 2027. Daviss has also been seen in Do Revenge, starring opposite Maya Hawke.
Snoop Dogg biopic finds the actor to play the iconic rapper
The Snoop Dogg film will follow his rise from troubled youth to adulthood. His debut album, Doggystyle, reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts and was a top-10 hit in Canada as well. He has released 21 studio albums overall, nine of which have charted in the top 10. He has also been part of six top-10 singles.
Speaking with Billboard at the 2025 BET Awards, Daviss said of getting the role of the rap legend, “It was crazy, I was auditioning for that role for months. It was a stringent process, you know? Dogg wanted to put me through my paces and make sure that I was the right person for this. I was relieved, I was excited, just ready to go."
The untitled Snoop biopic will be directed by Craig Brewer, who has previously helmed projects such as Coming 2 America and Hustle & Flow. Universal Pictures will be in charge of distribution. Snoop is only one of the producers as highly successful Brian Glazer will take that role along with Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker.
There is no timeline for the film to come out as the cast is still needing to be filled out. Potentially, 2026 could be the year of release, but 2027 might be more likely.
