Who missed out on seeing David Gilmour on his Luck and Strange album tour late last year? It was a relatively short run of dates, just over 20 if you add in a couple of rehearsal shows with an audience in Brighton, UK.
By all accounts, each night on stage was a brilliant experience from one of the best classic rock musicians. But we can now all share in that with the release of Gilmour’s latest live material.
He’s followed up those end-of-year dates with a new collection of media just released. There has been an in-cinema film release Live at the Circus Maximus, Rome. That's been followed by home versions on DVD and Blu-ray. There’s also a huge four-album, double CD The Luck and Strange Concerts, which came out on October 17. It’s available in a variety of formats and on all the usual streaming platforms.
Ok, so maybe you did have to be at one of the gigs to really soak up the atmosphere. But the filming and albums run that very close and deliver the superb live experience to your eyes and ears. Certainly, Gilmour fans will relish the chance to watch and listen.
David Gilmour brings the Luck and Strange concerts home
There is plenty of great music and visuals though for everyone, whether a hardcore fan or new to Gilmour and his music. Of course, there is a heavy draw on the set list from that new Luck and Strange album. But as with any live gig, there is a great depth of past favorites in there too.
It’s a 23-track strong release covering that latest album, some other solo work, and of course some Pink Floyd standards. You can see the full listing at the end of this article. Luck and Strange had many great reviews when released last year, its songs stand up very well live too. And it’s great to see the family connection with his daughter Romany again joining him on stage.
There’s also some poignant reminders of Richard Wright, Gilmour’s Pink Floyd colleague. The title track from the Luck and Strange album featured Wright on keyboards from an old recording. On this tour, Gilmour also played “A Boat Lies Waiting” from his Rattle and Lock 2015 album. The song was written in memory of Wright, so a couple of specific reminders along with the Pink Floyd tracks.
As you’d expect the album carries all the hallmarks of Gilmour’s music. Nonetheless, there are several iconic guitar solos throughout. To cap all that is possible are a couple that rank as his most revered and outstanding solos. “Comfortably Numb” is the song and Gilmour has recently spoken of the way he plays those live, by emotion and feeling, at each gig. What a way to close the gig, film, and album. Don’t miss it.
