Van Halen is far more than a band or brand. It is an experience, especially for those who have served as the vocalist for the group. There have been several, but the best-known, of course, are David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar.
The singers approach their craft completely differently. Both want to put on an entertaining show, of course, and they mostly pull that off. But for Roth, it is the show that matters, while with Hagar, he has the better voice and the music is the lead.
Roth was set to do a good run of concerts in 2026, but, unfortunately, recently canceled all but one of them. The reason is unknown, and it is easy to jump to a health-based situation causing the cancellations. Maybe ticket sales were a problem, too, but that doesn't appear to be the case with Roth this year.
Sammy Hagar takes the perfect high road in recent David Lee Roth situation
Hagar found out about the cancellations from former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, who has performed with Hagar since both left Van Halen. Instead of dismissing the cancellations as something unimportant, Hagar took to social media to deliver his well-wishes to Roth and also make an offer that fans hope he wouldn't refuse.
"I just got a call from Michael Anthony...about your tour getting canceled," Hagar said. "And I want to say from the bottom of my heart, I’m sorry. I hope you’re well. I hope there’s not a physical problem...Mike and I love the fact that you’ve been out there doing it, supporting the greatest band in the world that we were both part of...Come to Vegas for the residency in September. Come on, join us. Sing a couple songs, MC the damn show. Come out and just do what the f*** you do – which is pretty damn entertaining!"
Good for the Red Rocker. Plus, the suggestion that David Lee Roth joins him in Las Vegas would increase the draw to the residency, but for a fantastic reason. Who wouldn't want to see the singers trade off vocals on Van Halen tunes while doing their own? It would be epic.
i'm looking rough, but who cares I'm serious with this post. I hope the news about Dave is not AI!!!!! if it is, my post is still coming from my heart and soul. It is so important that this music carry on especially with the AI music out there. those of us that can still go out… pic.twitter.com/UYiX5OqwvW

Fans will debate who was better for Van Halen, of course. Roth brought charisma that help edht eband evolve in the 1970s. He got attention because of his attitude, and, therefore, so did the band. It was a win-win.
Hagar, though, has more nuance and range to his voice, and if the band wanted to do rock ballads, the kind that Roth might not be able to pull off (nor want to), then the Red Rocker was the guy they needed.
Both editions of the legendary band were great, and one can choose their favorite. Combining Roth and Hagar now wouldn't equal the best of Van Halen, but as Hagar implied, the concerts would be quality entertainment. Let's just hope Roth is healthy enough to do so, if he chooses to join Hagar.
